Recreation Nation: Development Sessions

Thanks to a generous grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, STARS is excited to provide a series of interactive and fun virtual programs. Hosted by Noah Elliott, the Program Outreach Coordinator with STARS and Paralympic Snowboard Medalist, these weekly sessions are designed for those with spinal cord injuries. Each week a different topic will be discussed. Noah and invited presenters will provide guidance an information about safely recreating with a spinal cord injury. The goal each week is to provide an informative, fun, and engaging experience for all participants.

Session 1: Health and Wellness Talk with special guest Sady Tobin

Description:  Sady Tobin, Strength and Conditioning Coach with US Paralympics Alpine & Snowboard team and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club will lead a discussion on the importance of body movement and ideas to prepare for outdoor recreation.

Description: We’re excited to host special guests Justin Phongsavanh, Team USA Paralympic athlete, and a surprise guest athlete. Both athletes are here to share their stories and answer questions about being an athlete with a spinal cord injury.

Session 3: Mindfulness Session

Description: This session will be led by special guest, Kristen Race, Ph.D. Dr. Kristen Race is the founder of Mindful Life™, which is an organization focused on “step-by-step, simple, brain-based Mindfulness techniques” that  “help you flourish in our stressed-out, fast-paced world”.

During this session, you will be provided a deep dive into starting and maintaining a mindfulness practice:
A)  Mindfulness and the Brain
B)  Making Mindfulness stick
C)  Integrating Mindfulness into your day to day life
D) Creating mindful routines and rituals

Session 4: Preparing for an Active Summer

Description: Join Noah and other members of the STARS family as we discuss preparing for an active summer. Topics may include hobbies, sport specific information, health and wellness. The STARS Program Team is here to answer questions, share ideas and experiences, and have a fun conversation.
