Scholarships

STARS strives to keep our programs affordable but recognizes that some may need additional support to access our programs.  Our scholarships are based solely on financial need and only complete applications will be considered.

To be considered for a scholarship, your application must be completed and submitted to STARS by May 15th or December 1st (depending on the season). Please use the resources below to submit your paperwork electronically. The “Scholarship Process” document is a great resource to ensure this is an easy process.

You will be informed of your application status after the scholarship deadline, which is May 15th or December 1st (depending on the season). Please note that most scholarships are partial, while full scholarships are reserved for those with significant needs. In addition, all scholarships require a $25 processing fee. For questions, please call the office at (970) 870-1950 or email us at info@steamboatstars.com.

Thank You To Our Scholarship Program Sponsors

STARS Scholarship funds are made possible by generous contributions from the James Family Scholarship Fund, Iron Horse Family Foundation, and private donors. With their support, STARS is able to help individuals with disabilities and their families see all the possibilities that are open to them through adaptive recreational activities.

James Family Scholarship Fund

  • Bill and Gloria James established the Jaime James Scholarship Fund in memory of their daughter, Jaime, who passed away of a brain tumor in December 2005. They created the fund because Jaime loved Humble Ranch, and as a pediatric nurse, she loved children. It was a fitting tribute to honor her memory. Bill, Gloria, and Jaime were all volunteers at Humble Ranch from the program’s inception. Bill, a former Olympic Equestrian, was a volunteer horse leader, Gloria was a volunteer horse side-walker, and Jaime helped in many various ways. After Jaime’s tumor came back, she became a client in the program. When Bill passed away in 2008, Gloria changed the scholarship fund’s name to include him. The name of the fund also includes and honors Jaime’s husband, J.T. Thorup, who passed away in 2011.

Since STARS absolved the Humble Ranch equine therapy program and summer adventure camps, Gloria wanted to keep the James Family Scholarship Fund viable to continue benefiting youth in Routt County.

Kettering Family Foundation

  • The Kettering Family Foundation was founded by Eugene W. Kettering, son of Charles F. Kettering, and his wife Virginia W. Kettering in 1956. With local connections to the Yampa Valley and Colorado this foundation supports our scholarship program.
